Broad core update by Google? What’s that?

Google’s Core Algorithm has been updated since 2010 to effectively transform the performance of its search result. These changes or updates affect the calculation of rankings by the search rankings.

Everytime Google updates its core algorithm, it’s with the intent to make the search more easy and relevant for the user. However, SEO professionals have to face the hurdle of fluctuation of rankings.

New Year, New Algorithm Update 2020

Like every year, on 13th January 2020 Google announces its first broad core algorithm update of the year, also called the Core Update. The roll out was pre-announced through its twitter handle Google SearchLiaison set up in November 2017 to provide information on Google update.

Another following tweet confirmed the Algorithm update to be live and to be rolled out in the Google data centers in the following days.

Google has been transparent about what guidelines to follow for the webmasters and content creator through its post on its Google Webmaster Blog.

Google makes thousands of tweaks in its core algorithm each year but not every update is announced. However, it’s only a few times that a broad core algorithm update is made and its significance is related to the impact it has on the website rankings.

Unlike some minor tweaks in the core algorithm which is usually unnoticed due to lesser tremors, the broad core algorithm update has a huge impact on the SERP which is enough to create a stir among webmasters and SEO community. Therefore with every Broad Core Algorithm Update, there is a lot of speculation in the SEO community as to how much ranking and traffic will be affected.

Featured Snippets of 2020 Core Algorithm Update

The new Broad Core Update regulates the previous featured snippet listing which will not allow URLs to appear on the first ten organics results after it is being shown as a featured snippet. It came out on 23rd January, 2020.

Google’s Danny Sullivan says this new tweak in the Google Broad Core Algorithm says while replying to a tweet that the webpage in the featured snippet #0 position will not be shown in the first ten listings.

According to Google’s public SearchLiaison Danny Sullivan, this new change will ensure that the Search Result page is not cluttered and, only has relevant results with optimum usage of space. The Featured Snippet will be considered as one of the ten web page listings.

“If a web page listing is elevated into the featured snippet position, we no longer repeat the listing in the search results. This declutters the results & helps users locate relevant information more easily. Featured snippets count as one of the ten web page listings we show,” tweeted Danny.

 Also,

Google confirmed the previously launched Favicon has been rolled out for desktop as well with a new brand icon. The domain URL and the Ad symbol will be bolded for better user understanding.

Analysis of Broad Core Algorithm Update

In the initial phase, not much impact has been registered but there have been lots of reactions in the WebmasterWorld and BlackHatWorld. Some initial reactions to the Google Broad Core Algorithm Update.

What can we do about this?

Google describes its Core Update as “significant, broad changes to our search algorithms and systems … designed to ensure that overall, we’re delivering on our mission to present relevant and authoritative content to searchers.”

They also mention that Google Core Algorithm Update is not necessarily a penalty and there might nothing be wrong with the pages.

But we will also have to keep note that it’s all about the quality of the content of provided and Google keeps a check of duplicity and inaccurate content through such Broad Core Algorithm Update. If the website is taking a loss due to Google Core Algorithm Update, Its worth assessing the content provided for visitors, whether it’s up-to-date, accurate or just demonstrating expertise.

It would be suggested to keep the website under due observance and its performance and make necessary changes as per Google’s post on its Google Webmaster Blog which acts as a guideline for webmasters and SEO experts what to do if the website suffers from Google Broad Core Algorithm Update.

Also, checking competing websites performing well and understanding how they are serving their core audience.

Therefore, to beat others in the ranking game its best that the content should match the intent of the searchers. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
